Keratometric stability
needed for 3 months after pterygium excision before additional procedures
Clinical stability of keratometric parameters after pterygium
surgery is essential in patients requiring consecutive procedures, such as
cataract surgery. This prospective observational study enrolled 75 eyes from 75
patients undergoing pterygium excision. Patients were evaluated monthly for 6
months. Forty percent and 73.3% of eyes, respectively demonstrated corneal
astigmatic and corneal kerarometric stability at six months post-operation,
while after 3 months of initial stability, 46.7% and 27.3% respectively. It is
recommended that stability be achieved for at least three months before
commencing with any additional procedures. Clinical Ophthalmology, March
2021.

Factors in visual
outcome of open-globe injury repair by trainees
The authors studied the visual outcomes of trainees in primary
repair of open-globe injury (OGI) and associated factors of the results. Most
of the 78 cases over a 10-year period were managed well by the trainees, with
little assistance needed from subspecialists. Poor initial visual acuity was
associated with high risk of visual loss while higher ocular trauma scores were
inversely related to lower risk of evisceration/enucleation. Clinical
Ophthalmology, March 2021.

Accuracy of CT and MRI
for patients with retinoblastoma
The authors assessed the diagnostic accuracy of magnetic resonance
imaging and computed tomography for detecting the extent of tumor invasion in
eyes with advanced retinoblastoma prior to enucleation. They concluded that CT
showed poor diagnostic accuracy for four high-risk factors: scleral, choroidal,
and anterior eye segment invasion, and post-laminar optic nerve invasion; and
that MRI was moderately accurate for the latter. Current Eye Research,

Laser trabeculoplasty
for glaucoma significantly reduces IOP
The researchers evaluated the efficacy and predictive factors of
success after selective laser trabeculoplasty (SLT) for treating various types
of open-angle glaucoma. Results showed that IOP and glaucoma medication usage
significantly decreased after SLT. Treatment success was tied to more than 10%
elevation in IOP at 1 hour whereas systemic hypertension and baseline IOP were
negative predictors of SLT success. Clinical Ophthalmology, March 2021.

HPV infection is not
tied to pterygium development
This study assessed the role of human papillomavirus (HPV) in
pterygium pathogenesis. Analysis of 116 study patients did not reveal
transmission of HPV through autoinoculation from the genital tract. Scientific
Reports, February 2021.

Penetrating
keratoplasty yields satisfactory outcomes in patients with Harboyan Syndrome
In this study, researchers describe 8 patients from 7 families
with Harboyan Syndrome. All patients with bilateral cloudy corneas at birth and
11 eyes underwent penetrating keratoplasty. The overall corneal graft survival
rate was 73% and the average graft survival time was 95 months. Outcomes after
the procedure were satisfactory and were not tied to mutations in SLC4A11, the
authors conclude. Journal of Human Genetics, February 2021.

Study describes
alleles associated with VKH
The study describes the frequency and association of gene alleles
potentially associated with Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) in patients from
Northern Thailand. The findings suggest HLA-DRB1 and HLA-DQB1 may be potential
markers for this disease. Ocular Immunology and Inflammation, February

Study reveals utility
of portable visual acuity tests
In this study, investigators validated use of the Rosenbaum near
vision card and a smartphone-based visual acuity test in 295 eyes. Both methods
yielded visual acuity measurements that were comparable to standard ETDRS.
These portable visual acuity tests may be useful during the COVID-19 pandemic,
the authors conclude. Clinical Ophthalmology, February 2021.

Novel retinoblastoma
therapy shows promise
This is the first study to describe a novel GD2-specific chimeric
antigen receptor-modified T cell therapy against retinoblastoma. In vitro
experiments demonstrate the therapy’s potential and suggest that it may improve
when combined with immune checkpoint therapy. Translational Oncology,

PPV with ILM peeling yields
low closure rates for large full-thickness macular holes
Investigator evaluated the outcomes of pars plana vitrectomy (PPV)
with internal limiting membrane (ILM) peeling in 158 eyes with large idiopathic
full-thickness macular holes (FTMH). They observed that closure rate was
relatively low in these eyes. Surgical success was tied to a basal linear
diameter of 1200 µm or smaller, no preoperative vitreomacular interface abnormality,
extended ILM peeling and postoperative ellipsoid defect of 500 µm or smaller. Clinical
Ophthalmology, February 2021.

Conjunctival
intraepithelial neoplasia can manifest as a pigmented tumor
Investigators report a case of conjunctival intraepithelial
neoplasia (CIN) in a patient with pigmented conjunctival lesion. Biomicroscopic
examination revealed a gelatinous pigmented conjunctival mass with feeder
vessels and conjunctival impression cytology confirmed it as CIN. The tumor
responded well to treatment with 0.02% mitomycin C. Case Reports in
Ophthalmology, January 2021.
