Intravitreal
mesenchymal stem cells show promise for retinitis pigmentosa
Researchers assessed the use of intravitreal autologous
mesenchymal stem cell transplantation in 14 patients with advanced retinitis
pigmentosa. During a 12-month period, patients exhibited stable conditions and
slow disease progression, with some reporting improved quality of life. Adverse
events were mild and included slight IOL displacement and flat choroidal
detachment. Additional studies are warranted. Stem Cell Research &

Successful management
of complete ankyloblepharon with SOMET
In this case, the authors describe a patient with complete ankyloblepharon who
was successfully managed with simple oral mucosal epithelial transplantation
(SOMET). Six weeks after treatment, the patient had complete epithelization of
corneal-like epithelium. Although there was evidence of conjunctival invasion,
the ocular surface was stable for 1 year and both fornices remained deep. Cornea,

Surgical treatment is
key for globe salvage in case of contact lens-related Pythium keratitis
This study describes 6 cases of contact lens-related Pythium keratitis. Five
patients used soft contact lenses and one used rigid gas-permeable lenses; all patients
had a history of water contamination. All patients had tentacle-like lesions
radiating in a reticular pattern and were treated with therapeutic penetrating
keratoplasty after failing to response to medical treatment. One patient
underwent enucleation and 5 achieved globe salvage. Cornea, January 2021

Eye injuries with
IOFBs yield poor visual outcomes
This study describes the visual outcomes of 359 patients with eye injuries and
retained intraocular foreign bodies (IOFB). Most patients had poor final BCVA.
Predictive factors for poor visual outcomes included poor presenting BCVA,
retinal detachment and endophthalmitis. The authors concluded that these
factors could help with diagnostic decision making and treatment to help
improve final outcomes. Clinical Ophthalmology, January 2021

Microvascular
attenuation in eyes with resolved AACG is comparable to POAG
Researchers compared peripapillary perfused capillary density (PCD) in eyes
with resolved acute angle-closure (AACG) and primary open angle glaucoma
(POAG). Imaging with OCT angiography showed that the degree of microvascular
attenuation in both groups was similar. The authors recommend ending use of
glaucoma medication after IOP normalization but note the need for additional
research to explain the relationship between PCD alterations and IOP-induced
damage. Asia Pacific Journal of Ophthalmology, March-April 2021

Vitreous block can
occur in patients with pseudophakia
In this paper, the authors describe a patient with pseudophakic angle closure
due to vitreous block after ureteroscopic lithotripsy under general anesthesia.
They note that this patient had vitreous prolapse due to a prior trauma with
inadequate vitrectomy. General anesthesia, they added, might contribute to
vitreous block in susceptible patients. International Medical Case Reports,

Deep learning model
for anterior segment OCT may help detect plateau iris
This study tested a deep learning model for detecting plateau iris from
anterior segment OCT images. Using scans from 179 patients with primary
angle-closure disease (PACD), the model performed with 88% sensitivity and 98%
specificity. The authors conclude that it could potentially help better detect
this non-pupillary block mechanisms in patients with this PACD. Translational

Sterilization of
single-use instruments can help mitigate
endophthalmitis after vitrectomy
This retrospective study assesses the rate of endophthalmitis after pars plana
vitrectomy (PPV) with recycled single-use devices. There was no statistical
difference in the rate of endophthalmitis among patients who underwent 23- or
25-gauge vitrectomy. In addition, the authors report that their standardized
protocol for instrument sterilization led to endophthalmitis rate that were
comparable to previous studies that disposed of vitrectomy tools after one use.

Pseudoexfoliation
syndrome has greater microvascular attenuation than true exfoliation syndrome
Researchers compared peripapillary perfused capillary density (PCD) in eyes
with true exfoliation (TEX) and pseudoexfoliation (PEX) syndrome. Imaging by
OCT angiography revealed that the PEX group had a greater loss of annular PCD
than both the TEX group and healthy eyes. These findings suggest more
microvascular attenuation in PEX and that PEX and TEX are separate diseases. PLOS

Extended ILM peeling
yields higher closure rate for full thickness macular hole
Researchers compared 1- and 2-disc diameter conventional internal limiting
membrane (ILM) peeling for large full thickness macular holes. The extended
procedure led to a higher closure rate, particularly among patients with
chronic full thickness macular holes for more than 6 months. However, visual
outcomes were comparable in both groups. Eye, November 2020

IOP readings of
edematous eyes appear to be lower with GAT than other tonometers
Researchers assessed IOP of 60 patients with corneal edema after
phacoemulsification using 4 different tonometers. Pressure reading with
Goldmann applanation tonometry (GAT) tended to be lower than those obtained by
the other tonometers, particularly the Tono-Pen. Caution should be used when
interpreting GAT IOP readings of edematous corneas, the authors conclude. Journal

Early surgery and
amblyopia treatment should be considered for childhood glaucoma
This retrospective study identified prognostic factors for poor visual outcomes
in 45 glaucomatous eyes of children 4 years or younger. Approximately 64% of
eyes had poor visual acuity, often due to deprivation amblyopia. Prognostic
factors for poor vision included secondary glaucoma, a diagnosis at 3 months or
younger, and an interval of 3 months or longer before surgery. Journal of

Recurrent
Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada disease linked to altered choroidal volume
The authors examined 3D choroidal volume changes in patients with recurrent
Vogt-Konayagi-Harada disease. Using enhanced depth imaging OCT, they found
alterations choroidal volume during the recurrent stage of disease, even in an
absence of anterior segment inflammation. The findings suggest central
choroidal volume may serve as a biomarker for detecting choroidal morphological
change in this patient population. Current Eye Research, November 2020

Vitrectomy provides
favorable anatomical success in AIDS patients with retinal detachment
This analysis evaluates outcomes in 45 patients (52 eyes) with AIDS undergoing
vitrectomy for cytomegalovirus retinitis-related retinal detachment. Over a
mean follow-up of 42 months, primary anatomical success was achieved in 86% of
eyes and 65% had a VA of 20/200 or better. The use of highly active
antiretroviral therapy prior to surgery and early vitrectomy increased the
probability of achieving both anatomical and VA success. Medicine
