ABSTRACT
Objectives 1. To measure the prevalence of diabetic retinopathy in
community hospitals.
- To evaluate the
factors associated with diabetic retinopathy.
Methods This is a cross sectional study. The authors performed a stratify random
sampling in diabetic patients in community hospitals in nakhornratchasima
province. Factors such as age, sex, occupation, type of diabetes, disease
duration, blood sugar, body weight, height were recorded and were analyzed
for association with diabetic retinopathy.
Resultes Eight hundred and forty two patients were enrolled. Cataract was presented
in 58%. Diabetic retinopathy was found in 21.8% of the patients and PDR
was found in 2.6%. Factors significantly associated with the presence of
diabetic retinopathy were duration of diabetes, blood sugar control, hypertension
and albuminuria (p < 0.05).
Conclusion The prevalence of diabetic retinopathy in community hospitals was 21.8%.
Knowledge of risk factors for diabetic retinopathy is beneficial for development
of guideline for referral for general practitioners as well as internists
in community hospitals.
