ABSTRACT Teratoma
are tumors composed of an admixture of tissues that are foreign to the anatomic
site of origin. Congenital orbital teratoma are rare germ cell tumors in children.
There were only two cases
of congenital teratoma found in Songklanagarind Hospital in13 years(1982-1995).
They were unilateral huge retrobulbar tumors that displaced the eyeballs forwardly.
Histological sections demonstrated derivatives of all three germ cell
layers. Pathology showed a mixture of embryogenic and mature diverse tissue
types, including brain and nelve fibers, skin and appendages, bone and cartilage,
muscle fibers, fat, lymphoid follicles, bronchial and gut epithelium. They
were one immature and the other mature teratomas.
