ABSTRACT During 1989-1995, there
were six cases of post-operative endophthalmitis at Udomthani Hospital.
Four
cases of endophthalmitis following ECCE with IOL were identified from a total
number of 5453 cases ; one case of post-trabeculectomy endophthalmitis was
found from a total number of 1092 cases, and endophthalmitis occurred in one
case among the one-hundred and two cases in which phacoemulsification with
IOL was performed. Positive vitreous cultures yielded acenetobacter in one
case and proteus milabilis in another.
The final visual outcome
was devastating in all but one case in which the final vision was 20/30. Potential
risk factor were carefully reviewed including, for example, prolonged operating
time and uncleared air-conditioning ventilation. Improper steritization of
surgical instruments was a significant finding. Literature review of comparable
studies was also provided.
