To
determine the progressive changes in axial length, keratometric reading and
lens power of human eyes, biometric measurement in 2,238 normal eyes was prospectively
studied.
The mean axial length was
23.36 + - 1.04 mm. in male and 22.94 + - 1.26 mm. in female. The mean keratometric
measurement in vertical meridian was 43.51 + - 2.10 diopters in male and 44.32
+ - 2.18 diopters in female. The mean horizontal keratometric values was 43.59
+ - 1.67 diopters in male and 44.32 + - 1.63 diopters in female. The mean
lens power was 19.16 + - 2.59 diopters in male and 19.65 + -
2.84 diopters in female.
Keratometric reading in
diopters seems to increase and lens power decreases with age at a statistically
significant level. However, no significant change was noted in axial length,
although it increases approximately 0.5 mm with age.
