ABSTRACT

To determine the progressive changes in axial length, keratometric reading and lens power of human eyes, biometric measurement in 2,238 normal eyes was prospectively studied.

The mean axial length was 23.36 + - 1.04 mm. in male and 22.94 + - 1.26 mm. in female. The mean keratometric measurement in vertical meridian was 43.51 + - 2.10 diopters in male and 44.32 + - 2.18 diopters in female. The mean horizontal keratometric values was 43.59 + - 1.67 diopters in male and 44.32 + - 1.63 diopters in female. The mean lens power was 19.16 + - 2.59 diopters in male and 19.65 + - 2.84 diopters in female.

Keratometric reading in diopters seems to increase and lens power decreases with age at a statistically significant level. However, no significant change was noted in axial length, although it increases approximately 0.5 mm with age.
