ABSTRACT
: A
prospective study 81 cases of ulcerative keratitis treated at the Department
of Ophthalmology, Songklanagarind Hospital from April 1990 - July 1993 showed
that there were 56 males and 25 females with the ratio of 11 5.
The age ranged from 1 to
85 years with the peak at 21-30 years and 51-60 years. The causes of corneal
ulcers were mostly unknown (39.5%) and the other were precipitated by vegetative
materials (25.9%) and some kinds of dust, iron and insects (13.5%).
The etiologic organisms were bacteria (65.4%), fungi (25.9%), virus
(3.7%) and mixed organisms (2.4%).
The majority of bacteria
were Pneumococcus and Pseudomonas. The commonest fungus was Fusarium. The
organism found by smear 38.2% and culture 34.5%
