Endogenous Klebsiella
Pneumoniae Endophthalmitis Report of the First Case in a Patient with AIDS-related
Complex

ABSTRACT A case of endogeneous Klebsiella pneumoniae
endophthalmitis in the patient with AIDS- related complex is described. The patient was
admitted with fever, urinary tract infection, oral condidiasis, bilateral cervical
lymphadenopathy, ocular pain and visual loss in the right eye. All culture medias included
specimens from blood, urine, aqueous and vitreous humor grew Klebsiella pneumoniae.
The patient was treated
with intravitreal, systemic and topical antibiotics eye drops for two weeks
before the right eye ruptured spontaneously. Evisceration was performed without
any complication. Four months later the patient developed Cryptococcal meningitis
with full-blown AIDS and died three days later. To our knowledge, endogenous
Klebsiella pneumoniae endophthalmitis in an AIDS-related complex patient has
never been reported in literature.
