Abstract The Corneal endothelia
of a 29-year-old man and a 34-year-old woman who had worn polymethylmethacrylate
hard contact lenses for 9 years and 11 years respectively were evaluated
by means of non-contact specular microscopy. Their endothelial cells had
densities within normal limit but varied significantly in size and shape.
These changes may have reflected diminution in the reserve capacity of the
endothelial cells. To avoid comeal decompensation, therefore, were recommend
that a longterm hard contact-lens wearer should have a specular microscopic
examination of his corneal endothelium prior to undergoing intraocular surgery.
